Now that the clocks have gone back, we asked Steven Rich in our CHS Estates Team to give us an insight into planning for winter and any adverse weather.

Hello, my name is Steven Rich, and I’m part of the Estates Team at HRI. My role involves overseeing various maintenance and operational aspects of our facilities, ensuring everything runs smoothly throughout the year. While winter brings specific challenges, my responsibilities also include managing general maintenance and safety protocols.

We’re approaching winter. Can you tell us a little bit about how the Estates Team at HRI prepares for adverse weather?

As we approach winter, the Estates Team takes several steps to prepare. We conduct regular assessments of our facilities, checking heating systems, insulating pipes, and ensuring that all necessary equipment for snow and ice removal is in good working order. We also co-ordinate with local weather services to stay informed about incoming storms and prepare accordingly.

What do you do to keep people safe on the days it’s very frosty or we have a lot of snow?

On particularly frosty or snowy days, we prioritise safety by clearing walkways and parking areas as soon as possible. We also implement safety measures like salting surfaces to prevent slips and falls, and we communicate regularly with staff about any changes in operations due to weather conditions.

What words of advice would you give to colleagues, patients and visitors to cope in these conditions?

To colleagues, patients, and visitors, my advice for coping with winter conditions is to dress warmly in layers, take your time when walking on potentially icy surfaces, sticking to gritted pathways and be mindful of your surroundings. It’s always a good idea to check for updates from the Estates Team regarding facility conditions and safety measures.

How do you like to relax away from work?

To relax, I enjoy spending time outdoors, whether it's hiking or just taking a walk in the park. It helps clear my mind and recharge my energy.

What would colleagues be surprised to know about you?

One thing my colleagues might be surprised to know about me is that I have a passion for photography. I love capturing nature and architectural shots, especially during the different seasons.
