A reminder that the the Blood Management Plan is in place to ensure any shortage of blood and/or blood components is managed and ensuring transfusion support for patients on these occasions in a consistent manner. You can read it on our Blood Transfusion intranet page here.
- Restrict blood to clinically essential transfusions only
- Adhere to transfusion indication codes (listed on EPR blood request)
- In stable non-bleeding patients use a threshold to transfuse of 70g/L (80g/L in acute coronary syndrome)
- Consider using a single unit blood transfusion
- Correct iron deficiency using IV iron where appropriate
- Think before arranging a platelet transfusion - is it definitely clinically indicated?
- Consider alternatives such as early use of tranexamic acid and optimisation of any coagulation deficit
