Data from The UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA), suggests that the number of tuberculosis cases is increasing.  World Tuberculosis (TB) Day - marked each year on 24th March - is designed to raise public and professional awareness that TB, an infectious disease, still exists and can have a devastating health impact, despite being a preventable and curable disease.

TB remains an epidemic across much of the world, causing the deaths of nearly one-and-a-half million people each year, mostly in developing countries. It commemorates the day in 1882 when Dr Robert Koch astounded the scientific community by announcing that he had discovered the cause of tuberculosis, the TB bacillus. Koch's discovery opened the way towards diagnosing and curing TB.

The signs and symptoms of TB can be very similar to COVID-19. If you or someone you know has had any of these symptoms for three weeks or more please contact your GP:

  • persistent cough
  • fever
  • extreme tiredness/lethargy
  • unexplained weight loss
