Our PALS Team have seen a significant increase in patient concerns regarding lost property.

Patients who are admitted to our hospitals are actively discouraged from bringing non-essential valuables. However items such as dentures, hearing aids and glasses are essential. Essential items need to be recorded in a property disclaimer form which then needs to be signed by the patient - should they have capacity. The form can be found on page 17 in the Policy for the Safekeeping of Patient Property.

Between April to December 2023, lost property reimbursement cost the Trust £27,194 and is being authorised out of ward budgets.

To help us improve, please make sure that all documentation in relation to patient's valuables and belongings is completed at the time of admission. If the patient is transferring, or being discharged, please ensure that all relevant documentation has been completed and all belongings have been returned to the patient or their relative. The completed disclaimer should be kept in the patient's notes and a record of this being signed should be documented in EPR.
