Preparations to build our new, multi-storey car park at Calderdale Royal Hospital are underway, with initial works due to start on-site this coming July.
The number of staff parking spaces at CRH will be significantly reduced for a period of up to 18 months whilst construction works are undertaken, impacting most colleagues who currently park on site.
Rob Aitchison, Deputy Chief Executive at CHFT, said: “The current number of car parking spaces at CRH is extremely limited, and we know that both colleagues and patients can often find it very difficult to park at the hospital.
“We’re doing all we can now to future-proof car parking provision as our services expand and change at CRH. Once built, the new, 800-space car park will significantly improve car parking provision, almost doubling the total number of parking spaces available.
“Unfortunately, to get to that position, we need to suspend staff parking at CRH for up to 18 months. We fully recognise that this disruption will be inconvenient, but we know that this a necessary step to improve parking provision in the long-term. The multi-storey car park will also free up space to allow for future development of the new clinical building and ward areas.”
What will happen and how will I be impacted?
The first step will be to close the patient and visitor-only car park near the main entrance from July to prepare for the construction of the new multi-storey car park.
To make sure we have enough spaces for our patients and visitors to park, we will designate the majority of staff parking spaces across CRH as patient and visitor only. This means that the overall number of spaces for patients and visitors will remain the same during the preparation and construction of the multi-storey car park.
A limited number of priority, short-stay, drop-off and disabled spaces will be available for staff on-site.
Between Mondays and Fridays, colleagues will be able to access parking on-site for free between 5:30pm and 8:00am. At weekends, staff can park anytime for free.
What alternative parking options is the Trust providing?
To help minimise the disruption, we are providing alternative parking options for colleagues, including a free, temporary Park and Ride service from four locations (details enclosed in the attached map). At peak times, the shuttle buses will run every 10 minutes from the following locations:
- The Eureka! Museum Overflow Car Park (HX1 2LX)
- High Street Car Park (HX1 2ST)
- Savile Park Moor (HX3 0EG)
- Cedar Court Hotel (HD3 3RH) - this is an extra stop on the current HRI to CRH shuttle bus
We’re giving colleagues based at CRH plenty of notice to make sure they can start to plan their journeys to work ahead of these changes.
We are planning a series of engagement events about the car parking developments at CRH, where you can find out more, share your thoughts, or ask any questions. Details of how to register for these events will be shared in the coming weeks.
During the construction of the car park, colleagues who visit CRH may use the free Park and Ride service. If you have a permit which you only use at CRH, you will receive a rebate on the cost of this, but will be required to continue paying for a permit if you use it at other CHFT locations. Further details will be made available closer to the time on how this will work with existing permit payments.
Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) and further information is available on the car parking pages on the intranet. The FAQs will be updated as further questions arise.
We apologise for the inconvenience and thank colleagues for their understanding whilst these essential works are undertaken.
