It's Global Recycling day on Monday, 18th March, which also sees the re-launch our Dump the Junk campaign.
As spring is around the corner, our project to make our hospital environments clean, safe and tidy returns – with colleagues in estates and facilities ready and waiting to hear what equipment you may have on your wards or departments that is no longer needed.
Environment and Energy Officer, Grace Barret, said: “We want to know about all the equipment we are keeping in our work areas that is no longer used. This is so we can recycle it, store it, or put it into the appropriate waste stream. This is one of our Green Plan commitments to save energy and improve recycling.
“We’re asking colleagues to tell us what they have now, so we can make sure we have the space to store things, as well as helping items reach the correct waste streams.
“We will be doing this in stages, but first we need your help to tell us what you have and where it is. This includes important IT kit and medical devices (even if you don’t think they work anymore), as well as standard things like tables, chairs and cupboards."
Please don’t log jobs with porters just yet, as the team want to gather the information via the form below so they can coordinate the work. And do remember that if you plan to have filing cabinets removed, to empty them of all their files first, disposing of them appropriately.
The campaign in 2022 had 62 areas across the Trust requesting removal of their surplus equipment. The requests identified 732 items including 312 pieces of IT kit, 26 electrical/mechanical items, three medical devices and 191 pieces of furniture and other equipment.
How to tell us what you have
Please complete this form by Monday, 18th March. It’s worth checking with your manager to make sure that only one entry per area is submitted.
Please note that IT equipment (computers, Zebra handheld devices, printers etc.) and medical devices (intended for medical use) are not junk. They should not be disposed of in the regular waste stream. However, we will still organise the collection.
What happens next?
The team will collate the responses and be in touch to organise a collection.
