Our clinical psychologists and psychological therapists provide psychological care as part of patients’ routine physical care.

They offer talking therapies to help patients understand and work through their difficulties. They offer specialist intervention to patients, addressing their psychological needs arising from, or closely linked, to their physical health condition. They also support each areas multidisciplinary team through supervision, training and consultations.

Since the department was set up in 2016 with one clinical psychologist in cancer, they've expanded and now cover a range of areas. These include adult gastroenterology, diabetes, cancer, bariatrics, respiratory, long Covid, stroke inpatients and paediatric diabetes.

Head of Clinical Health Psychology and Professional Lead, Hannah Gormley, said: “We are passionate about the integration of both physical and psychological care, because we know the significant impact this has on patients’ experience, as well as their healthcare outcomes.

“It also has a positive impact on the wellbeing of the medical and surgical teams looking after our patients.”

If you feel that your clinical area could benefit from the psychological care the team offer, the team would be happy to discuss this with you.
