The Children’s Speech and Language Therapy Team, who form part of the Community Healthcare Division, have seen a fantastic outcome for a young man they have been working with throughout his childhood and adolescence.
Carly Hartshorn, Children’s Therapies Service Manager said: "Following an extended period of funding requests and an assessment, Ted is now using a communication aid to communicate in his everyday environments. He used it at the weekend independently for the first time to request cuddles on the sofa with his family and told them that he loves them.
“This is such a huge achievement for Ted, his family and the therapy team working with him. Speech and Language Therapist, Rosie Gammack has facilitated some incredible multi-disciplinary team working with Ted, his family, children’s therapies colleagues in the Occupational Therapy Team, his school staff and the specialist local centre for Alternative and Augmentative Communication (AAC).
“With Ted moving towards transitional points in his life, it is brilliant to see him explore his voice and ensure that his needs and wants are being met in all of his daily environments. It is so exciting that he has found his voice!”
