Our Prostate Cancer Exercise and Education Programme (PEEP) Team have their fingers crossed for tonight, as they've been shortlisted in the Team of the Year Category by the British Association of Urology Nurses.

They'll be attending the British Association of Urology Conference Awards Gala later to see if they've won.

Prehab Lead Nicky Hill, Medical Oncologist Uschi Hofmann, and Urology Clinical Nurse Specialist Anne-Marie Keen form part of The PEEP Team, and their work on the 12-week programme for men with prostate cancer who are being treated with hormone therapy is why they're at the finals.

The programme aims to support patients and their families with a focus on reducing the impact of the side effects of hormone treatment through exercise and information. It is tailored to educate and help patients support themselves.

Uschi has co-developed this programme as part of an 18-month leadership course, becoming a Clinical Champion with Prostate Cancer UK and presented them the PEEP programme as part of this course.

Nicky (pictured in red trousers) has co-developed this project to demonstrate the benefits of a targeted exercise programme for people living with cancer. As it reduces the impact of treatment and improves outcomes for patients. She presented these finding at the Macmillan Professionals Conference last week.

Anne-Marie is making sure the programme complements the support already available to men with prostate cancer, with the education component co-designed with patients to ensure it meets their needs.

Patient representative and member of the PEEP Team, Geoff Eagle, said: “PEEP has helped me understand my cancer and make lifestyle changes. I am now fitter and feel better than at any time since my cancer diagnosis. Talking with the other men on the course has proved mutually supportive and I know many of them have really benefited from participating.

“This is well deserved recognition for an excellent team who have put patients first to deliver an innovative programme that has life changing benefits to participants like me.”

Nicky said: “This nomination highlights the dedication, commitment and collaboration between healthcare professionals to design and deliver a programme like this and together with seeing first-hand the benefit and outcomes it has had on these men, we feel honoured to have been nominated and for the recognition.”

The team have successfully delivered the program to three patient cohorts this year and are hoping to secure funds for this to continue.
