He was born at HRI, treated here as a teenager, and saw his brother receive care from our neonatal unit. Now, Consultant Orthopaedic Knee Surgeon, Osman Riaz, has finally joined CHFT as a consultant - something he’s wanted to achieve since he was a teenager.

Osman, who specialises in sports knee injuries and joint preservation surgery, was born at HRI and has lived locally his whole life. He was aged seven when his younger brother Azam was born, and he needed care from CHFT’s neonatal department. He remembers visiting his brother often and would ask his dad for chocolate from the vending machine at the main reception - a vending machine that’s still there today.

In 2003 he did his work experience in the A&E department and whilst studying for his A-Levels, Osman fractured his thumb and had surgery at HRI to repair his thumb, which was still in a cast on his first day at university.

After seeing the work that orthopaedic surgeons did for their patients, it sparked his interest in orthopaedic surgery, and he decided to pursue a degree in medicine to become an orthopaedic surgeon.

After graduating, Osman worked as a junior doctor at CHFT and then spent a few years between our Trust and neighbouring hospitals during his training, until he finally secured his dream job at CHFT.

Osman, who now lives only a mile from HRI, said: “I’ve always wanted to work at CHFT because I’ve grown up in this area and it means a lot to me. My family and friends have been treated here and I always wanted to give something back to my local community. It’s a privilege to have a job here.”
