We have held the first Cardiac Patient Support night in a unique 3-way link-up with a top local hotel and our NHS Charity.
The event was held at the Pennine Manor Hotel, Scapegoat Hill, and set up by Sarah Clegg, Arrhythmia and Complex Device Specialist Nurse. More than 20 patients and their family members attended on the night. Pennine Manor has allowed us ongoing free use of the room so we can hold these events regularly. Our CHFT charity paid for refreshments and supported staff in finding a venue and creating resources for patients.
Arrhythmia and Complex Device Specialist Nurse, Layla Farrar, right, said: "These support groups enable patients to discuss their experiences and ask questions which other patients often have practical answers to. They also have the opportunity to ask the experts any questions which have popped up since their implants. And most importantly, it helps knowing you are not alone, and you are making friends and supporting each other."
From CHFT, Cardiac Physiologist, Mary Ward, Consultant Karthik Viswanathan and Dr Salim Ahmad also attended.
The feedback on the night was excellent, quotes include:
- Thank you for holding these events and helping us
- I am so glad I came, I have got some answers now
- Thank you for explaining everything so clearly
Feedback since the event:
- It made me realise I am not alone; I can build relationships with others in my situation and share experiences
- Attending the group was very beneficial and reassured me about some concerns I had.
The team is now setting up further support groups to take place throughout the year for their patients - going above and beyond what is required of them - but it provides patients with a safe place to ask questions and meet others with the same condition.
