Newly-qualified Clinical Endoscopist Specialist Nurse, Shaun Mawhinney, has just received his certificate from the Joint Advisory Committee (JAG) on Gastrointestinal Endoscopy, which means he will now be able to perform gastroscopy procedures.
The training programme was a seven-month, intensive course especially designed to train candidates in performing safe endoscopist procedures independently. Shaun is pictured with the new endoscopy simulator, which has recently been installed in HRI’s endoscopy unit. The simulator will enhance the training for the new endoscopists coming through the service.
Before enrolling, Shaun had no experience within endoscopy. He said: “I decided it was time for a career change last year and the clinical endoscopist role seemed really interesting. I particularly liked the autonomous aspect of the role. I’m so glad I made the change as the Endoscopy Team have been amazing.
“I’m so pleased, proud, and happy to receive my accreditation! The course was very intensive, but I’ve really enjoyed it and learnt so much. A particular mention must go to Clinical Endoscopists, Kim Clifford and Cath Berry, as well as Dr Bholah, who have all overseen and supported me through my training.”
Endoscopy Matron, Tracy Burland, said: “Shaun is a fantastic addition to an already great team of clinical endoscopists. He has showed so much enthusiasm and has embraced the world of endoscopy in such a short time. Now he can perform gastroscopy independently he will be going on to train in colonoscopy. A massive congratulations to him.”
