Our Admin Assistant, Hilary Wilson, is travelling to Kenya next month, where she will work in several orphanages to help the children living there. And her extra luggage allowance is the equivalent to a baby hippo!
Her fortnight away involves a lot of travel, including an eight-hour car journey to Eldoret where she will stay at an orphanage for babies. Once there she will help with child care, support staff, and meal preparations. She then plans to travel to different orphanages throughout Kenya, offering her help.
Hilary said: “One of the orphanages I’ll be staying at is trying to be self-sufficient and has recently managed, through donations, to install guttering. Meaning that when the rains arrive, they can collect the rainwater for washing and watering crops. If not, they must buy water which is very expensive.
She will finish her trip in Nairobi, where she will be spending time making and delivering food to children who live on the streets.
Hilary plans on taking items the children will be lacking. She's even booked extra luggage - 46kgs to be exact – the equivalent of carrying a baby hippo. She will also buy more items when she arrives, to help support the local economy.
Hilary is collecting items to take with her including:
- Swimwear - aged 4 to 17 years
- White t-shirts - aged 4 to 17 years
- Underwear - aged 4 to 17 years
- Vests - aged 4 to 17 years
- Handkerchiefs
- Colouring pencils
- Rubbers
- Pencil sharpeners
- Soap bars
- Reusable sanitary pads
If you would like to contribute, you can leave your donations at the reception desks at Acre Mills Outpatients for the attention of Hilary.
