Our team in Day Surgery at HRI are keen to show off their shiny certificate which proves categorically that they're one of eight new Elective Surgical Hubs in the country.

But it doesn’t stop there. Since their accreditation was announced in March, they have looked at different ways of working in the team and are able to see even more patients.

Clinical Operations Manager, Saran Ahmed, said: “Even the smallest changes have made a difference. For example, we make sure our first patient is ready to be seen on time. This means that at our 8.15am huddle we know we’re prepared for the first procedure at 8.30am.

“The knock-on effect means that often we can see one or two extra patients – even some from the inpatient list. We review all the procedures that are due to be carried out that day. If the procedure is appropriate for day case, and the patient has a carer or relative to go home with, then we can get them home sooner than planned. This all helps their recovery – and we know patients appreciate not having to stay in hospital if it can be helped.”

Saran’s colleague and fellow Clinical Operations Manager, Amy Shedden, added: “We’re also scheduling procedures further ahead, looking at those ones that are due in a fortnight. That two weeks lead time means we know we’ll have the equipment we need, and our link trainers can work with colleagues to train them if necessary.

"Our colleagues are supported at all times to deliver an excellent patient journey within our departments and I'm super proud of all they've achieved."
