The Theatre Team recently held an orthopaedic trauma simulation training session to explore different ‘what if’ scenarios.

This was the second time cross-site training between all three theatre areas has taken place. It proved to be another popular session, with colleagues coming in on days off or swapping days to ensure attendance.

Simulation training allows colleagues to explore ‘what if’ questions and scenarios in a risk-free environment, providing safe ways to test and explore different scenarios.

The training began with an education session provided by Consultant Anaesthetist, Dr Amy Mayor. Then began two simulations covering bone cement implantation syndrome and anaphylaxis to antibiotics.

The simulations meant that theatre colleagues could purposefully undertake high-risk activities and procedures without dangerous implications to themselves or their patients. The training simulations offer colleagues an opportunity to visualise and improve clinical practice and patient safety, to hone their skills, and to learn from potential errors.

Throughout the training crucial support was provided by Anaesthetist, Dr Matt Williams, Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon, Mr Ben Brooke as well as the Anaesthetic Team colleagues. A big thank you to the Simulation Team, Caren and Lucas for their help during the simulation training.

A third simulation training session has already been booked at CRH, focussing on paediatric treatment.
