A big welcome back to our colorectal surgeons, Tamsyn Grey and Muhammad Hussain. Along with Senior ODP Karla Lodge, and Theatre Charge Nurse, Steve Simpson they've just returned from The ORSI training academy in Belgium where they've been preparing for our first surgical robotic case this coming Wednesday, 21st June at Huddersfield Royal Infirmary.

This will be the first robotic surgery performed in Yorkshire using the next generation Versius robotic system and plans are already in place to roll out Urology , Gynaecology and Upper GI.

The system is operated by a surgeon using a 3D console monitor seated in theatre, with robotic arms at the patient's side along with a scrub nurse and assistant.

Robotic surgery presents an enhanced and much improved method of manipulating instruments for surgeons and will improve recovery time for patients. The team will also have access to collect data to monitor their personal performance and share learning with others.

Colorectal Surgeon and clinical lead for robotic surgery, Tamsyn Grey said: “We’re thrilled to get started with surgical robotics at HRI. Using a surgical robot gives surgeons an enhanced vision of the procedure so they can be more precise and accurate – that’s likely to mean a quicker recovery for the patient and improved outcomes – which is what really excites us.”

Deputy Director of Operations, SAS division, Laura Cooper added: “People often think technology like a surgical robot will be more likely to appear at the larger teaching hospitals in Leeds, Sheffield or London, but we’re committed to doing the best for the patients of Huddersfield, Halifax and beyond.

Well done and thanks to all involved in this exciting project. Reports of how the first procedure goes will be shared in next week’s bulletin.
