Yesterday, Sunday, 18th October, was World Menopause Day. All this month we've been sharing information in conjunction with the Change Society (CHFT's dedicated menopause support group), to help raise awareness of menopause, and highlight the support available to colleagues.

You can find our more at our information stalls this week. Visit the sub basement at HRI and from tomorrow (Tuesday, 20th October), the main entrance foyer at CRH.

Menopause is a natural stage of life. Looking after yourself during this time can make a real difference to how you feel, helping you manage symptoms and maintain your overall wellbeing.

One of the best places to start is with the basics. Regular physical activity can help boost mood, improve sleep, strengthen bones and reduce stress. Whether it's a brisk walk, yoga class, swimming session or dancing around the kitchen or lounge, moving your body in ways you enjoy can have a powerful impact.

Good nutrition also plays an important role. Eating a balanced diet rich in fruits, vegetables, whole grains, protein and calcium can support both your physical health and energy levels. Staying hydrated and reducing excess caffeine or alcohol may also help with symptoms such as hot flushes and disrupted sleep.

Sleep is another key ingredient in self-care. Creating a relaxing bedtime routine, keeping your bedroom cool and limiting screen time before bed can help improve sleep quality, even when menopause-related symptoms make restful nights more challenging.

Menopause can sometimes bring changes in mood, confidence or self-esteem. Taking time for activities you enjoy, practising mindfulness or relaxation techniques, and talking openly with friends, family or colleagues can help you feel supported and less alone.

Most importantly, be kind to yourself. Menopause is a significant life transition, and some days may be harder than others. Listening to your body, seeking support when needed and prioritising your wellbeing can help you navigate this chapter with greater confidence and resilience.

Looking after yourself during menopause is not about striving for perfection. It's about making small, positive choices that help you feel healthier, happier and better equipped for whatever comes next.

The Change Society at CHFT is here to support you with information, support and guidance around the menopause transition and is for those going through the menopause as well as anyone who is involved in supporting someone who is going through the menopause.  We talk openly about symptoms and the impact of these on our work and home life.  We talk about the things that help us and those things which don’t.  We have an active Teams chat and regular meetings.  If you want to get involved or just get more information, please email ODTeam@cht.nhs.uk.  We look forward to supporting you!
