Rotational physiotherapist, Nathan Choudary, become a flu vaccinator last year, as he saw it as an opportunity to help keep colleagues and patients well over winter, while picking up new clinical skill.

Now in his second year, Nathan has already started the ball rolling for this year’s campaign, which begins this coming Thursday.

He's set up a dedicated clinic from the team's office and is already booking in physiotherapists, occupational therapists, therapy assistants, managers and discharge team colleagues, with more than 20 already signed up to receive this year's jab.

Nathan has noticed more younger colleagues booking into his clinic this year, as he’s been talking to them about why flu vaccination matters.

"Sometimes people think, 'I'm young, I'll be fine if I get flu,'" he said. "But it's not just about protecting yourself. We work with vulnerable patients every day and we're also out and about in the community, mixing with lots of people as we have busy social lives.

“Even if we're okay, we could pass the flu on to someone who isn't.”

Nathan says helping colleagues understand the wider impact of flu has made a difference, particularly when it comes to protecting patients and keeping services running.

"We see it every winter. Flu comes around every year and when outbreaks happen, wards can be closed, patients become more unwell and services come under pressure. The more of us that are vaccinated, the less impact flu can have. If we can all do our bit to reduce the spread, it makes a big difference."

There is still time to come forward to be an immuniser as we’ve extended the deadline to next Monday, 5th October.

Most registered clinical practitioners can become Peer Immunisers, including Registered Nurses, Midwives, Physiotherapists, ODPs, Nursing Associates and Pharmacists. The only requirement is that your BLS training must be up to date. Please email flu@cht.nhs.uk 

And this year, any peer immuniser who vaccinates more than 20 colleagues will be entered into a prize draw to win one of four £50 shopping vouchers.
