The Inpatient Diabetes Team across both HRI and CRH are getting ready to raise awareness of hypoglycaemia during Hypo Awareness Week 2026.

Taking place from 14 to 20 September, Hypo Awareness Week is an annual campaign that provides a platform for the diabetes community to educate healthcare professionals about the signs, symptoms and treatment of hypoglycaemia, commonly known as a hypo.

This year's campaign introduces a new mascot, Harry the Frog, who takes over from the popular Diabetic Duck campaign of 2025. Harry will be "hopping" into action across hospital wards, helping to highlight the importance of prompt hypo recognition and treatment.

Throughout the week, the inpatient diabetes team will be visiting wards, sharing helpful advice, practical tips and educational resources with colleagues.

Hypoglycaemia occurs when the blood glucose levels of a person living with diabetes fall too low. Symptoms can include feeling shaky, dizzy, sweaty or generally unwell. In severe cases, a hypo can lead to unconsciousness or coma if not treated quickly.

The campaign aims to improve awareness and confidence among healthcare professionals, ensuring patients receive timely and appropriate care when experiencing a hypo while in hospital.

Hypo Awareness Week 2026 has been funded through sponsorship from pharmaceutical and medical technology companies, helping local diabetes teams to support education and awareness activities throughout the week.

Colleagues are encouraged to look out for Harry and the team during the week and take the opportunity to refresh their knowledge of hypo recognition and treatment, helping to keep patients safe and improve outcomes for people living with diabetes.
