Research took centre stage in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) last week as colleagues came together to celebrate ICU Research Week, highlighting the important role research plays in improving care for patients today and in the future.

Throughout the week, the ICU research team organised a range of fun and interactive activities to make research more engaging and accessible for staff. These included a research-themed escape room, quizzes, treats and study-specific giveaways, all designed to raise awareness of the research studies currently taking place within the unit.

The week was a great success, with colleagues from across the multidisciplinary team getting involved, asking questions and learning more about the research opportunities available within ICU. The team also received positive feedback from colleagues, who praised the week for being informative, well organised and engaging.

Beyond celebrating the work already taking place within ICU, Research Week also highlighted the wider importance of research across CHFT. Research plays a vital role in shaping future treatments, improving patient outcomes and building the evidence that informs clinical practice. By supporting research and enabling patients to take part in studies, teams across the Trust are helping to improve care for future generations.

Dr Aaron Corp, ICU Consultant and Principal Investigator for MOSAIC, SEPTIC and SPICE-IV, said: "Delivering high-quality clinical research in ICU focuses the multidisciplinary team on providing excellent care. I'm proud of the team for embedding research in ICU over the last few months."

Tobi Adedeji, ICU Clinical Research Nurse, added: "It's been a busy couple of months embedding research within ICU, and the support from ICU staff has been incredible throughout the whole research process, from screening through to recruitment. I've also been really encouraged by how open patients and their families have been to taking part in research. Many are genuinely eager to play their part in making a difference and helping to improve care for future patients."

Matthew Robinson, Clinical Research Team Leader, said: "Our ICU research portfolio is going from strength to strength. The ICU Research Week has been a great success. It's fantastic that we are able to offer our ICU patients access to research."

Joanne Walker, ICU Manager, said: "Our research team has made a significant positive impact in our ICU recently. They have been instrumental in increasing our participation in several studies, leading the implementation of research initiatives, and providing education and support to the wider team. Their dedication and expertise have helped embed a strong research culture within the unit, ultimately contributing to improved opportunities for innovation and better patient care."
