Overgate Hospice will temporarily pause its inpatient services from this Friday as it prepares to move into its new inpatient unit, designed to provide high-quality specialist palliative and end-of-life care for local patients and families.

As part of the transition, a phased reduction in inpatient beds began in June. The last patients will leave the current inpatient unit on 17 July. Where specialist inpatient hospice care continues to be needed, transfers will be arranged, including to The Kirkwood where appropriate.

There will be no inpatient care available at Overgate Hospice between Friday 17 July and Tuesday 4 August 2026. The hospice advice line will also be unavailable during this period.

During the temporary closure, Overgate will continue to support healthcare professionals with referrals to neighbouring hospices wherever possible. Referrals can be discussed through the usual Overgate referral line between 9am and 5pm, Monday to Friday. Outside of these hours, advice and support will be available through the consultant on call via the CHFT switchboard.

To help maintain support for patients across Calderdale, Overgate will increase its medical input into the community specialist palliative care team while the inpatient unit is closed. Dr Sheils and GP trainees will provide an enhanced community presence throughout the transition period.

Referral lines will reopen on Tuesday, 4th August, with the new inpatient unit becoming fully operational from 5 August and welcoming new admissions. The move will provide a modern environment that supports the delivery of compassionate, specialist care for patients and those closest to them.
