Sip Til Send is a patient-friendly NHS initiative that prevents prolonged dehydration by allowing patients to sip clear fluids (up to 170ml per hour) right up until the operating theatre team "sends for" them. It replaces the traditional, uncomfortable nil by mouth wait, and supports a quicker recovery.
Key guidelines for nursing colleagues
- Patients should be given their normal / prescribed oral medication unless otherwise specifically stated.
- Patients should have Sip Til Send placed on their information board.
- Domestic staff should be made aware that patients can have clear fluids but not food or milky drinks.
- Patients should be provided with a glass of water per hour or if able to manage themselves a glass and jug.
- This is applicable until theatre send for the patient or come to collect them.
- This applies to all patients for theatre / procedures unless specifically stated otherwise.
Key guidance to share with your patients
- What you CAN drink: Water, diluted squash, and fruit juice (no bits). Some locations also allow black tea or black coffee.
- What to AVOID: No solid food, milky drinks, fizzy drinks, or chewing gum for at least 6 hours prior to your procedure.
- How much you can sip: You may sip slowly - up to about one standard NHS cup (170ml) every hour while waiting.
- Why it helps: Staying hydrated prevents headaches, reduces post-operative nausea, and helps you recover faster.
