Today, Monday, 22nd June, we mark Windrush Day, which is a time to reflect, celebrate and recognise the lasting legacy of the Windrush Generation.

Windrush Day commemorates the arrival of the HMT Empire Windrush at Tilbury Docks on the 22nd June 1948. On board were passengers from across the Caribbean who had answered the British Government’s call to help rebuild the nation following the Second World War.

Their arrival was a defining moment in modern British history. The Windrush Generation, and those who follow, have made a profound and lasting contribution across every aspect of society—including the NHS, public services, culture, education and community life.

Did you know?

  • Around 500 passengers came from Caribbean countries
  • Many helped build the early NHS and public services
  • The term “Windrush Generation” includes those who arrived between 1948–1970s
  • Windrush communities have had a lasting impact on British culture and society
  • Windrush Day is about celebrating contributions and promoting inclusion

Windrush Day provides an opportunity for us all to reflect on our shared history, celebrate diversity, and reinforce our commitment to equality and inclusion within our organisation and communities.
