The Business, Education and Law Department at the University of Huddersfield have named CHFT Large Employer of the Year at their annual awards.

The department supports CHFT in running our management courses, and the nomination was submitted by Operations Manager and Senior Leader Apprentice, Dennie Sebastian.

Here are some snippets from his nomination:

“Many apprentices balance demanding clinical or operational roles with academic study, demonstrating resilience, dedication, and a strong commitment to improving both their own leadership capability and the services they work within. Through their apprenticeship programmes, colleagues have led projects and initiatives that directly contribute to service improvement and better patient outcomes.

“On a personal level, I initially trained as a clinician because I was motivated to make a positive difference to individual patient lives. Through undertaking a Level 7 Senior Leadership apprenticeship at CHFT, I have been able to broaden that impact and develop the leadership skills required to contribute to service improvement at a wider level. It has supported my transition from a clinical role into an Operations Manager position within the Emergency Department. I am now able to contribute to operational management, service redesign, and quality improvement initiatives that aim to improve patient pathways and outcomes for the wider community."

Dennie (pictured) couldn't attend the presentation last week, but said: "I was genuinely delighted when I found out that CHFT had won the award. As both an employee and an apprentice within the Trust, it felt incredibly rewarding to see CHFT recognised for the support and investment it provides in staff development through apprenticeships. What stood out to me during the programme was how many other CHFT colleagues were also undertaking apprenticeships, which clearly demonstrates the Trust’s commitment to creating opportunities for staff to grow, develop, and progress. This award is a real testament not only to my own experience, but also to the shared views of other CHFT apprentices who have felt supported and encouraged throughout their development.

"As one of the largest health employers in the local area, CHFT’s investment in apprenticeships contributes to the wider local community by developing talent and supporting sustainable career opportunities within healthcare. Through this commitment, CHFT strengthens its workforce while helping to shape the next generation of NHS leaders".

Director of Workforce and Organisational Development, Jason Eddleston, said: “I wanted to thank Dennie for taking the time to nominate the Trust and for putting together such a fantastic nomination.

“It’s absolutely brilliant to read first-hand how the support we offer to our fantastic apprentices and future leaders is delivering such tangible benefits for colleagues like Dennie and ultimately our patients and the local communities we serve.

“A huge shout-out to colleagues in our Widening Participation team too, who work tirelessly to help colleagues in their personal and professional development and to achieve their goals.

“It’s great to see our partnership with the University go from strength to strength.”
