This week is Great Big Green Week, which is the UK's largest celebration of community action on climate change. CHS's environmental team have been working hard to organise a variety of activities to raise awareness about climate change.  A full list of activities, as well as more information on important environmental topics, can be found in their Green Newsletter attached below.

Procurement Assistant, Poppy Bray, is also a CHFT Green Champion and plays a key role in both ensuring our purchasing decisions are compliant, cost-effective and aligned with our environmental and social goals.

She said: "As a Green Champion, I consider the environmental, financial and social impacts in procurement decisions, helping to promote sustainability wherever possible - an example is increasing the sustainability requirements during the contracts and tender process.

"A significant proportion of our organisation’s emissions come from the supply chain and so procurement can help address this by embedding sustainability requirements within tenders, setting clear supplier expectations, prioritising local suppliers and businesses, minimising packaging and promoting re-use, waste reduction and product life cycle considerations."

Upcoming events to get involved with this week include:

Meat-Free Monday

Eating less meat is better for your health and better for the planet. With that in mind, Southside Dining at HRI will be having a meat-free menu today - Monday, 8th June 2026.

Our CHS catering team have worked hard to put together a seasonal, filling menu that proves going meat-free doesn’t have to mean going without. The menu includes tasty options such as vegetarian Cumberland sausage, sweet potato and chickpea curry and a tomato, basil and goat’s cheese tart with a choice of sides. Vegetarian and vegan snacks such as pastries and pizza slices will also be available.

Green Awards

Do you know an individual or team who are making outstanding contributions to sustainability? Why not nominate them for a Green Award.

We’re looking for colleagues who go above and beyond to:

  • Reduce waste, energy use or carbon emissions
  • Drive sustainable clinical practice
  • Promote greener behaviours
  • Deliver innovative environmental solutions
  • Inspire others to take climate action

Nominations will be open all week, from Monday 8th June until Sunday 14th June.

Biodiversity Bingo

Collect a bingo card from the main reception desk at HRI and step outside during your break to see how many species and natural features you can spot around the hospital grounds. Spending time in green spaces has been shown to reduce stress, lower blood pressure and improve mental wellbeing.

Complete your bingo card before the 14 June and send a photo via the QR code on the form, or through this submission link, to be entered into a prize draw.
