Essential safety work is taking place on Scammonden Bridge (Rainbow Bridge) from 20 April to October 2026.

National Highways are replacing the existing aluminium parapet with a new steel one to keep the structure safe for the long term.

To carry out the work safely, the M62 will be closed in both directions between junctions 22 and 24 (Ainley Top) on weekday nights, 8pm–6am, on the following dates:

• 12 May – 27 May 2026
• 19 June – 9 July 2026
• 6 August – 25 August 2026

During closures, traffic will be diverted from J22 via:

A672 → A58 → A646 → A629 → back to the M62 at J24

(The same route applies in reverse for westbound traffic.)

Delays are expected. Please allow extra time and follow the signed diversion routes rather than sat nav directions.
