Foundation Year 2 (FY2) resident doctor, Haris Hussain, is lacing up his running shoes ready to tackle the London Marathon next month to raise funds for the charity Children with Cancer.

Haris, who is currently working on Ward 12 at HRI as part of his rotation said: “I’ve chosen to raise money for this charity after working on the Oncology Ward for four months. I understand just how important it is to further research into cancer, and to help those in need. Having younger siblings really hit close to home too which was another reason I chose Children with Cancer.

“I will be running with a good friend. I met him through volunteering in a charity many years ago and we have both committed to volunteering ever since.”

It is only Haris’s second marathon having run the Manchester Marathon last year.

He said: “I sound a bit crazy but to prepare for Manchester, I only did three 5K runs! I really tried to push myself.

“So for London, I’ve been doing weekly 5K runs, with the occasional long distance runs in between. In addition I took part in the 75 Hard Challenge twice, and I’ve lost more than 12kgs.

We asked Haris for his tips for anyone planning to take on a similar challenge.

“Train, train, train! (something I am bad at doing out of procrastination). But honestly if you start early you’ll be fine! And genuinely just enjoy the day! The vibes are amazing, and everyone is cheering you on. One big tip I’d give is to train with others - it really helps me to stay focussed and enjoy my runs a lot more.”
