Dr Emma Spencer has been appointed as the new Lead Medical Examiner for Calderdale and Huddersfield. Emma succeeds Dr Tim Jackson, Consultant Intensivist, who has led the service for the past five years.

Emma brings more than 22 years of experience as a GP and GP trainer. She spent 18 years working in Holmfirth before moving to Rosegarth Surgery and now Spring Hall Group Practice in Calderdale. She joined the Medical Examiner service in July 2023 and says she finds the work incredibly meaningful.

Emma said: "Being able to help the next of kin understand what has happened to their loved one is hugely important. I am looking forward to stepping into the Lead ME role and getting to know more colleagues across both the Trust and primary care."

She will now lead a team of 13 Medical Examiners and three admin colleagues who support both hospital and community cases.

One of Emma’s first priorities will be improving the speed at which Medical Certificate Cause of Death (MCCD) paperwork reaches the ME team.

"Families cannot organise funerals, access pensions or bank accounts, or notify statutory bodies until they have a death certificate. When there is a delay it can be really distressing. I want to work with colleagues to help streamline this wherever possible."

Emma is open about the emotional side of the role and how she stays grounded in a demanding field. When she's not busy at work, she has an impressive list of hobbies.

"All of medicine can be emotionally challenging, but knowing you can help families move forward really matters. I also have plenty of outlets for stress like running, yoga, playing cricket, walking, baking and reading. I knit, crochet and sew and I make some of my own clothes. I always have something in my hands, so I have a bit of a reputation for being an avid knitter and  crocheting."

Emma is keen for colleagues to pick up the phone if they are unsure when completing an MCCD.

"We are a friendly team and we would much rather talk things through in advance than send paperwork back. If you are not sure, please just get in touch."
