Last week during Women in Construction Week, our construction partner for our new hospital building at CRH, Laing O’Rourke spoke to local students all about what it’s like to work in construction. The event, which was held at Kirklees College on Tuesday 3rd March, saw seven local schools bring female students to the college for the day.

Over 80 female students attended to hear about Laing O'Rourke, the new hospital build at CRH, routes into the industry, and experiences from the Laing O’Rourke team as women working in construction. Other construction companies also attended the event.

Construction Employer Engagement and Recruitment Advisor at Kirklees College, Agata Walon, said: “Thank you for delivering such an inspiring and engaging session at our recent Women in Construction event at the school. The feedback from students was extremely positive. They found it very interesting to hear about the variety of roles available within the construction industry and were surprised by how many opportunities exist specifically for women. Your presentation was described as amazing and inspiring, and it clearly made a strong impact.

“Students were highly engaged throughout, asking many questions about career pathways, competition between companies, and how you began your own journeys in the construction sector. Hearing first‑hand experiences helped them better understand the industry and imagine themselves working within it.

“Overall, the session broadened their perspectives and encouraged them to think differently about construction as a career option. Thank you again for your time, insight, and contribution to the students’ learning experience.”

Creating opportunities for students is part of our Social Value Legacy Plan, which aims to create a long-lasting positive impact on our communities, far beyond the new hospital build. You can read more about our commitment to social value on our website: Our community - CHFT Future
