Congratulations to Mesothelioma UK Clinical Nurse Specialist, Simon Bolton, who recently received the Excellence in Research award for a study he led on Improving Research Access for Mesothelioma Patients (IRAMP).  Simon was presented with the award at the United Kingdom Oncology Nursing Society (UKONS) 20th Anniversary Conference, where he represented our Oncology Nursing Team.

Simon said: "The study was undertaken in collaboration with Mesothelioma UKs Research Centre at University of Sheffield and funded by the Mavis Nye Foundation.

"It explored the experiences of patients, carers, and healthcare professionals, highlighting the importance of open and timely conversations about clinical trials for those affected by mesothelioma. The findings have helped raise awareness of research access and the vital role it plays in patient care.

"I was incredibly proud to receive the award. Thank you to the Research team at CHFT and the Mesothelioma UK Research Centre at University of Sheffield who supported me with the study."

The team previously presented their research at thoracic-focused meetings and conferences throughout 2025. Presenting at the UKONS anniversary conference offered a valuable opportunity to share this work with a wider oncology audience and to encourage discussion and comparison with research into other rare cancers.

Simon’s conference registration fees were generously funded by CHFT Charity, helping to support his attendance and enabling wider engagement with the oncology community. This support has helped pave the way for meaningful conversations about mesothelioma research and care on a national platform.
