The Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) Cycle to Lapland Challenge at CRH has seen colleagues, families and the local community coming together in support of babies and families who receive neonatal care.
Today, Monday, 22nd December, has seen them go over and above their original £7,000 target in just three weeks.
All the money raised will support the refurbishment of the three Parent and Family Rooms on the NICU, providing a welcoming, private space for families during some of the most difficult moments of their lives.
NICU Sister, Jo Richardson, said, “The response from the public and colleagues has been absolutely overwhelming. We’ve been so touched by the kindness, encouragement and generosity shown by our community and it really reminds us how supported our families and our unit are – even from families who received our care up to 18 years ago! Every mile cycled and every donation means so much to us, and seeing people come together for our babies and parents has been incredibly special. This support will help us create a space that will make a huge difference to families when they need it most.”
The appeal launched on Monday, 1st December at CRH with a strong start, including a visit from local personality Matt Jameson, who officially opened the challenge by cycling the first 10 miles. Since then, weekly events in the hospital main reception have brought together staff, patients and visitors, with bake sales, tombolas, festive activities and live entertainment helping to build momentum and spread Christmas cheer.
The appeal has also received significant support through generous donations outside of the team’s fundraising goal, including £1,000 from local company Pennine Pneumatic Services Ltd.
The NICU Cycle to Lapland Challenge continues throughout December, with the static bike available in the main reception at CRH every Monday, and on the NICU at other times. Supporters are also encouraged to take part virtually by cycling at home, at the gym or outdoors and submitting their miles.
Community support has been at the heart of the challenge, with families who have previously received care on the unit returning to take part, share their stories and contribute miles in celebration or remembrance of their NICU journey.
Emma Kovaleski, Head of Charity and Volunteer Services, CHFT Charity, added, “It’s been a privilege to support the NICU team with this challenge. The passion and commitment they’ve shown, alongside the incredible response from our community, has been truly inspiring. Our mission as a charity is to support CHFT to deliver outstanding, compassionate care by funding projects that enhance patient experience and meet the unique needs of our communities, and this appeal embodies that perfectly. Seeing colleagues, families and supporters come together to help create a space that will genuinely support families during some of their most difficult moments is exactly why we do what we do."
