We recently welcomed a Norwegian Trainee Advanced Practitioner, Maurius Petterson-Berg , who usually works at the Drammen Sykehus hospital in Norway. He came to visit CHFT to gain insight into how advanced practice is being integrated into the NHS workforce and how this can be implemented into the Norwegian healthcare system.

During his week-long visit, Maurius worked with our advanced practitioners, consultants, and emergency nurse practitioner teams to see how each area worked. He spent time with Corporate Lead Advanced Clinical Practitioner, Deb Lau, learning about Advanced Practice at CHFT, how Medical SDEC and UEC support emergency and urgent care patients with different pathways of care and referral pathways.

Clinically, he worked with Frailty Advanced Practitioner (AP), Pete Best, Ophthalmology AP, Johnathan Drury, and the ED AP team and Consultant in Emergency Medicine, Dr Mirjana Starinac Baldwin, who is also the consultant lead in ED for Advanced Practitioners. Maurius also experienced two twilight shifts at HRI and CRH Emergency Departments.

Maurius said: "All the staff had a high level of knowledge, and wanted to share it as much as time would let them. To have a day with the students at the university also gave me a peek into how education is built in the UK.

"There are several differences in the healthcare systems in Norway and UK, but overall it is similar. We still have a lot to learn from each other, and I hope that more of the Norwegian students will have this opportunity.

"The learning curve was steep, and I will be reflecting more on the experiences over time. I will be taking the experience with me into work and further education."
