From next Monday, 1st December, The Calderdale Home Oxygen Service (HOS-AR) is expanding its offer to support all adult patients who require, or are currently on, home oxygen therapy. This enhancement aims to address and prevent existing gaps in service provision. This provision is for Calderdale residents only. Locala cover Kirklees.

Exclusion criteria

This service is not suitable for:

  • Individuals without an established, quality-assured diagnosis for the cause of hypoxia
  • Patients whose underlying clinical condition is not optimised
  • Individuals who are not hypoxic, either at rest or on exertion
  • Patients who require emergency oxygen
  • Children and young people under 18 years of age

Referral sources

The service accepts referrals from a wide range of sources where patients show low or reducing oxygen saturations or partial pressure of arterial oxygen (PaO2). Referral sources may include, but are not limited to:

  • Primary Care Services
  • Community Services
  • Secondary Care
  • Tertiary Care
  • Other sources (e.g. occupational health, private healthcare providers, or self-referrals where an assessment has already been completed elsewhere)

Service provision

The HOS-AR team will:

  • Conduct clinical assessments for patients recently initiated on or requiring home oxygen
  • Conduct clinical review assessment for patients currently on home oxygen
  • Carry out home risk assessments to evaluate oxygen suitability and ensure patient safety

Risk assessments will include:

  1. Tobacco use including exhaled carbon monoxide (CO) monitoring and electronic cigarette use
  2. Social/environmental concerns any other identifiable risks within the home setting
  3. Safety risks including:
  • Substance misuse disorders
  • Gas appliances (fires/cookers)
  • Candles
  • Hoarding
  • Trip hazards
  • Mobility/frailty concerns
  • Presence and functionality of working smoke detectors
