The Cardiology Angiography service have recently been under significant pressure for Percutaneous Coronary Intervention (PCI) procedure waits, where waiting times were over six months. Thanks to a fantastic team effort they have reduced the waiting time to just six weeks, which is having a life-changing impact on their patients.
PCI is a vital non-surgical treatment for stenotic (narrowed) or obstructed coronary arteries, which can lead to angina or heart attacks. These procedures are performed in the Cath Lab by a highly skilled multidisciplinary team of Interventional Cardiologists, Radiographers, Physiologists, and Nurses.
General Manager, Medical Specialties, Dom Bryan, said: "The team have worked tirelessly to keep our patients safe. They have been fantastic in managing to reduce the waiting times from over six months to six weeks!
"I would also like to extend my gratitude to the Medicine Senior Management Team and to Joanne Hardcastle from the Surgery Senior Management Team for their invaluable support in making this possible. This achievement is yet another example of how we continue to put our patients first."
This reduction in waiting times has been life-changing for our patients and is now in line with national guidance. Angiography Senior Sister, Siobhan Mulvihill, said: "I would like to say a massive thank you to everyone involved for enabling us to cover the weekend lists. The support, flexibility, and teamwork has been phenomenal – I am proud to be a part of this amazing team.”
Head of Cardiac and Respiratory Physiology Services, James Battye, said: "I would like to express my heartfelt thanks to everyone involved in supporting the weekend sessions. Clearing a backlog of more than 100 patients in such a short period of time is an outstanding achievement.
"A sincere thank you also goes to Scheduler, Beverley Robinson, and Admin Manager, Claire Greenwood, for their exceptional coordination. Their efforts in ensuring all patients were contacted and that every list was fully utilised not only on a weekend but during the week was crucial to making this happen. Without their communication and organisation, this progress would not have been possible.
"This has truly been a remarkable effort across the entire Cardiology service. Thank you all for your dedication, hard work, and commitment to our patients."
