Get ready to see some fantastic facial furniture (or creative alternatives!) around CHFT, because Movember has officially landed! This November, we're having our very own "Mo-Off!" campaign, using the fun of Movember to spark connections, encourage conversations, and boost wellbeing right across CHFT.
Join the Great CHFT Mo-Off!
We know not everyone can (or wants to!) grow a real moustache, but everyone can be part of the fun and show their support! We're inviting everyone to join our inclusive CHFT Mo-Off. Whether you cultivate a genuine lip-tickler, sport a fabulous fake 'tache, draw one on, knit one, or get creative with cardboard, we want to see it. Each week, we'll feature your brilliant efforts on our "Mo' Selfie Wall" right here in CHFT News. Send your pictures to odteam@chft.nhs.uk (solo or team shots!) showing off your Movember spirit – let's celebrate our collective creativity and support for a great cause.
From Mo’ to moments of looking out for each other and our mental health
While the moustaches are a bit of fun, they're also a great conversation starter for some really important topics around men's health. Sadly, men die on average 4.5 years earlier than women, often for preventable reasons.
We're starting with a vital topic: mental health, stress and suicide prevention. It’s a sensitive subject, but one we can’t shy away from. Globally, tragically, one man dies by suicide every minute, and here in the UK, it remains the biggest killer of men under 50. A key element that contributes is the build up of stress. Endoscopy Decontamination Supervisor, Jacob Miah, recently opened up on what stress means to him on our ‘Offload - One Demand’ podcast series.
These aren't just statistics; they represent colleagues, friends, family members. The good news is, we can all play a part in changing this.
Brews and better listening
Creating a culture where it feels okay to talk and really listen is crucial.
- Ask twice: Don't be afraid to check in with a colleague. Sometimes a simple "How are you doing?" followed by a genuine "is that a real ‘alright’ or a fake ‘alright’?" can make all the difference.
- Listen actively: When someone does open up, try to give them your full attention. Put your own thoughts aside for a moment, nod to show you're hearing them, perhaps gently summarise what they've said to check your understanding, and resist the urge to immediately jump in with solutions unless asked. Creating that safe space to simply be heard is incredibly powerful.
- Brew with the boys: Why not make time for an informal chat? Once a week, suggest grabbing a brew with a colleague or encourage a team tea break.
One Culture of Care – for everyone
This Movember, let's truly embody our One Culture of Care by looking out for ourselves and each other. Support is also available through Occupational Health, our Mental Health First Aiders, the Chaplaincy, and our Freedom To Speak Up Guardians if you or a colleague need it.
So, get your 'mos' ready (real or otherwise!), send in those selfies (to odteam@chft.nhs.uk), and most importantly, let's keep talking and listening to each other - let's grow together!
