It’s Black History Month (BHM) and we’re keen to hear about how Black, Asian, and minority ethnic (BAME) people have inspired you. They could be famous or people from your local communities, friends or family.
Our Race Equality Network Co-Chair and Cancer Service Improvement Lead, Deehan Mair, has been friends with Channel 4's Gogglebox star Daniella Hylton for more than 20 years.
Dee said: “Daniella inspired me to pursue my goals with courage and clarity, and I’ve always admired how she stays true to her authentic self even on Gogglebox, reminding me that being real is the most powerful thing we can be.”
This year’s BHM theme is Standing Firm in Power and Pride. It’s about celebrating the strength, resilience, and pride that continues to inspire change and progress. It’s a chance for us to connect, reflect, and empower future generations, and celebrate the achievements of Black communities recognising the vital role they play in our society and across the healthcare system.
Dee added: “Many of our Black, Asian, and minority ethnic (BAME) colleagues continue to face racism and inequality. BHM is a powerful reminder of the importance of standing together, celebrating contributions, and taking action to make our workplace fairer and more inclusive.”
“Let’s use this month to raise awareness, share stories, and take meaningful steps toward change. Together, we can make a difference, not just this month, but every day.”
Here are some ways you can show your support:
- Speak up and stand against racism in all forms
- Champion diverse voices
- Enforce zero tolerance for racism
- Listen, learn to staff who share real experiences to help others understand the impact of racism
- Support a zero-tolerance approach to bullying and discrimination
Share your own inspirational people with communications@cht.nhs.uk and we'll feature them during the month.
