If you’ve ever felt uncomfortable witnessing inappropriate behaviour, such as colleagues making inappropriate jokes, family members making a derogatory comment about a patient or colleague, or people smoking on site and you’re unsure as to how best to tackle it, the OD Team have some training that you might find helpful.

Organisational Development Practitioner, Frances Dowson, said: “Active Bystander training has been designed to give you a toolkit of ways in which you can do something either at the time or afterwards, to call out this behaviour and make CHFT an even better place to work and for our patients.

The 90-minute sessions include lots of interaction in the form of discussion and give you information and resources that are helpful in a range of situations.  Pilots were carried out last month with feedback including “excellent session, very informative” and “this session is very useful and has built up my confidence in speaking up for what is right.” Colleagues also commented that it left them more confident to speak up and challenge more, which can be really helpful in stopping issues escalating.

Frances added: “Getting that colleague feedback was brilliant. It’s allowed us to develop the training to include more scenarios and discussion, which participants found so useful, so it’s now even better!”

Linked to the Active Bystander training are our Sexual Safety briefing sessions. These will give you an overview of what exactly constitutes sexual misconduct and what you can do about it, whether you experience it or witness it.  Here is a link to sign up for one of our one hour sessions:  https://forms.office.com/e/vnUbifFfgr or you can get in touch with us via ODTeam@cht.nhs.uk to arrange a session for your team.

We look forward to seeing you at a session soon.
