Today our contractor Huber will begin a process called piling as part of the construction of the new multi-storey car park at CRH.

Piling means putting in a series of concrete pillars underground to provide stability to the car park. To carry out the work a huge piling rig was brought on site over the weekend.

Our Site Manager for the work is Paul Ryan. Paul said: "The car park is being built using what's known as modern methods of construction. This is a process which focuses on off-site construction techniques, as alternatives to traditional building. For your new car park, that means we'll be using pre-cast concrete and steel components.

"Building the car park this way means it will also be completed much more quickly than traditional construction methods, and in parallel to the onsite works, will help provide reduced traffic on site, safer working practices and increased quality."

The construction team and CHS will continue to monitor vibration, dust and noise.

The piling work will be carried out during normal working hours and is expected to take less than nine weeks.

The turning circle at CRH will remain open for drop offs and pick ups, though we will see increased construction traffic in the area. Every effort will be made to minimise the impacts on residents living nearby.

Also to support the start of construction of the new car park, some small trees at CRH have been removed over the last few weeks. These trees were mainly located within the vicinity of the car park and main entrance, and don’t affect the green corridor along the main roads around the hospital. As part of the build, more new trees will be planted on site, to ensure we create a positive effect on our local environment.
