Ten years ago, 14-year-old Abhishek Subramaniam came to CHFT to shadow our former Chief Executive, Owen Williams, as part of National Takeover Day - a national programme giving young people opportunities to experience leadership roles.

Last week, Abhi began his Foundation Year 1 Doctor's placement at HRI - the place which first sparked his dream of one day becoming a doctor. We've been speaking to him to hear more about his story.

"I have always had an interest in healthcare, even from an early age. But the spark lit properly for me after Takeover Day. It was from seeing the impact the staff had on patients. After the Takeover Day, I had this feeling I wanted to study medicine - coming to CHFT, meeting Owen and the teams - it really inspired me.

"Two years later I had just completed my second work experience at CHFT. During this time, I worked in clinics, on wards and in theatres, but it was patient advocacy that stood out to me. I see healthcare as a way to speak up for people in need, and that's what I saw during my work experience - colleagues managing to put smiles on people's faces, even at their most vulnerable time.

"I started studying medicine at the University of Plymouth, about as far from Huddersfield as you can get! It's such a long course, so it can be difficult at times - seeing your peers finishing their studies, getting into work and starting their adult lives. But the whole time I held onto my dream of becoming a doctor.

"I've always known I wanted to come back to Huddersfield. Yorkshire is my home, and I can't think of a bigger honour than giving back to the community that has helped shape me. When I found out my request for placement at CHFT was going to happen, I think I screamed, I was so happy! I called my parents and just said, I'm coming home."

"This is my biggest dream come true. There's a sense of family at CHFT, this truly feels like coming home."

Ten years ago, Abhi said "A real doctor to me is a person who puts their patients above everything." When asked again he said: "A real doctor to me is about improving the quality of a patient's life by working with others - other professionals and specialties. I love working with people who will put everything else aside to help a patient. That's what medicine is about."

Good luck Abhi - CHFT is lucky to have you on board.
