Dr Qasi Ullah was the winner of our One Culture of Care Award, though sadly he wasn't able to collect his award in person.

Dr Mark Davies collected it on his behalf and told attendees: "Qasi came to us through the Certificate of Eligibility for Specialist Registration (CESR) programme, which is a non-standard route into medicine and he’s particularly energised in getting others through that route, and not just with the standard support."

We caught up with Qasi this morning on duty at CRH, when he sent us a photo (left). He said: "I was sorry to miss the awards but was on-call and then on duty. Mark called me to tell me I'd won and I had so many messages from colleagues last night, I am so proud. This win isn't just for me, it's for the whole team. There is a real culture of teamwork in the ED, with One Culture of Care at its heart."

Here are a few words from his nomination: “Qazi creates such a positive atmosphere in the department by building great relationships with the whole team. He's exactly the kind of mentor everyone hopes to find in emergency medicine, and he makes working in ED fun.

“What stands out is how he's made me a genuinely better doctor and clinician through his thoughtful guidance. The whole team benefits from his approach. He's incredibly fair and makes sure all juniors get equal support and attention regardless of experience level. This has visibly improved our team morale and created a more collaborative environment where everyone feels valued. He regularly highlights opportunities for career development and helps us see pathways we might not have considered. Several of us have taken on new projects or responsibilities because of his encouragement, which has strengthened our department's capabilities. Since working with him, I've seen my confidence in managing complex cases increase dramatically, and my clinical decision-making has become much more efficient. What makes the biggest impact is knowing someone as experienced as this person believes in your potential and is genuinely invested in your growth.

“The ripple effect of his care style has positively impacted our department's reputation and the overall patient experience.”

This category clearly stuck a chord with colleagues as there were 121 nominations. So a huge well done to our other finalists: Midwife Manager Carol Sarr, Staff Nurse Jan Cowling, the Long Covid Team and Staff Nurse Victoria Matundan.
