In May we put a call out for a CHFT Clinical Net Zero Lead ahead of relaunching our Green Plan later this year.
Step up Dr. Sophie Lawton, who has been championing sustainability in Theatres for some time. We asked Sophie to tell us a little more about why she's so passionate about making a difference.
Tell us a little about your clinical role here at CHFT and how long you’ve been in post.
I am a Consultant in Anaesthetics and Intensive Care at the Trust, and I’ve been in post for almost 18 months. Within my role, I have a particular interest in Enhanced Maternal Care and, importantly, in promoting sustainability within Theatres and ICU.
We hear that you’re already championing sustainability in Theatres. Can you tell us about some of the initiatives you’ve put in place and what inspired you to get involved?
In Theatres, we’ve recently set up the Green Theatre Team, and over the last six months, we’ve been actively implementing changes. This has included replacing disposable items with reusable alternatives, delivering waste management training to increase recycling, and adjusting theatre practices to promote sustainability. We also created a recycled whiteboard to display project updates and raise awareness.
It’s been fantastic to see our ideas come to life and to witness the enthusiasm and support from Theatre colleagues. For me, advocating for our patients and hospital community isn’t just about delivering excellent clinical care — it also means addressing climate change and environmental health, as these factors directly impact wellbeing.
What are your key objectives for the next 12–18 months as the Clinical Net Zero Lead?
Over the next 12–18 months, I’d like to explore and highlight the fantastic sustainability initiatives already underway across our Trust. From my experience in Theatres, I know that many staff have a real passion and enthusiasm for green changes. I’d love to hear more about what’s already happening, share those successes, and support further action and collaboration to help us move toward our Net Zero goals.
What are your interests outside of work? We’d also love to hear how you champion sustainability in your personal life.
Outside of work, I love being outdoors — whether it’s running on the moors with our dog or heading out on adventures with my kids. I try to make sustainable choices wherever I can, and I’m passionate about teaching (or sometimes nagging!) my children about why the environment matters and how we can all make a difference.
Do you want to make a difference like Sophie? Why not sign up for a short training session to help promote sustainability in the workplace?
Our training aims to help colleagues champion sustainability. It will help you understand why it's important in healthcare and what you can do in your own areas to help contribute to a greener NHS. Topics include energy efficiency, waste segregation and net zero.
The next sessions , which last around two hours, are Tuesday, 19th August in the CRH Learning Centre and Tuesday, 21st October at HRI. Sign up here: https://forms.cloud.microsoft/e/92cLhQYGAj
