We are proud to support the launch of the Safe Learning Environment Charter (SLEC) - a national initiative designed to strengthen and support the NHS workforce by creating positive and inclusive learning environments.

The initiative was co-produced by more than 2,400 learners, educators, and key stakeholders. The Charter sets out a clear vision for what a safe, supportive learning culture should look like across all NHS learning environments and professions. It reflects a shared commitment to ensuring that all learners feel valued, heard, and empowered to grow into confident professionals who deliver safe, compassionate, and high-quality care.

The SLEC aligns with the NHS People Promise, reinforcing the message that learners are a vital part of our workforce. They are included in the commitments we make to each other to improve the experience of working and learning in the NHS.

At its heart, the Charter promotes the development of environments where learners can thrive — with access to meaningful supervision, constructive feedback, psychological safety, and respect for diversity and wellbeing. These are the foundations that allow our future workforce to succeed and ultimately enhance patient care. We encourage all colleagues involved in supporting learners to familiarise themselves with the Charter and consider how its 10 principles can be embedded into daily practice. The principles are:

  • Respect and feeling valued
  • Positive identity
  • Wellbeing
  • Raising concerns
  • Placement induction
  • Communication
  • Flexibility
  • Supervision
  • Teaching and learning needs
  • Time and space for learning

Our Clinical Education Team will be visiting placement areas to support staff in implementing the 10 themes laid out in the Charter, and together help make CHFT a place where every learner feels safe, supported, and inspired.
