Conflict Resolution and Disengagement training is on offer for colleagues in patient-facing roles. The full day course helps participants to:

  • Identify possible causes of aggression and violence in hospital and community settings
  • Recognise the importance of early intervention and de-escalation strategies in reducing the occurrence of violence and aggression
  • Gain an awareness of mental illness and learning disabilities, and the possible impacts on aggressive behaviour
  • Demonstrate the ability to communicate effectively with colleagues and patients in the management of potentially aggressive incidents
  • Develop an awareness of models and approaches in the management of aggression and violence
  • Develop verbal de-escalation scripts (possibly job role specific)
  • Understand the principles of reasonable force in relation to breakaway / disengaging from an aggressive patient
  • Demonstrate how to escape safely from a variety of grabs and holds

Feedback from previous courses has been very positive with most colleagues coming away feeling more confident in what to do in challenging situations:

  • Sister, Everluck Asante: “It will help me get out of difficult situations and will have a positive impact on my work.”
  • Healthcare Assistant, Mabel Ayo-Ajayi “It will make me more confident at work.”
  • Staff Nurse, Saiqa Akhtar: “Gives me confidence to deal with angry patients and reach a resolution.”
  • Healthcare Assistant, Amy Firth: “It will give me the confidence to de-escalate or remove myself from a challenging situation.”

The courses run from 09:00 to 16:00. This training includes interactive role play, so please come in comfortable clothing with appropriate footwear. Please bring your own lunch or use the facilities on site. The Board Room at HRI is adjacent to the South Side Dining Room, where refreshments can be purchased.
