Get Set Goal have been back at CHFT to support people to improve their health and wellbeing. Last week the group of MSc Mental Health Nursing Students from The University of Huddersfield had over 120 conversations about the service in the Emergency Department; Urgent and Emergency Same Day Care; Frailty SDEC; Discharge Lounge; Surgical Assessment Unit; Surgical SDEC; and Outpatients. The Get Set Goal service offers a series of one-to-one appointments to help improve the health and wellbeing of anyone aged over 18.
Student Nurse Shadrach said: "Waiting rooms are a great place to meet people and tell them about the service. People mentioned health and wellbeing goals relating to weight loss; access to personal assistants when living with a disability; support in their role as carers; and wanting support to improve sleep, decrease anxiety, and manage stress. All of which falls within the remit of Get Set Goal that uses a health coaching approach."
Another student nurse, Faith said that someone asked her why she was doing this placement, she replied "I want to be able to give something back to the community for what they have given me in terms of the opportunity to train and work as a mental health nurse."
Ian Noonan, Nurse Consultant for Mental Health, said: "It is great to welcome the students here to CHFT. Health and wellbeing changes start with a conversation. Even just asking what comes to mind when you think about a goal you'd like to work on, can help start the process. The students were great advocates for the service."
Sarah Shaw, Strategic Lead for Clinical and Wellbeing Services, The Health and Wellbeing Academy, said: "Our get Set Goal students are regularly welcomed into CHFT to talk to patients about their health and wellbeing as well as promoting Get Set Goal, our student supported wellbeing coaching service. Our students consistently report how much they have enjoyed their conversations with the patients and that their confidence in starting a wellbeing conversation has grown. The day is an amazing innovative learning opportunity for our students and importantly patients benefit as well."
