It’s Insulin Safety Week, and this year our Diabetes Team are sharing a 90 second animation which briefly explains how the safe use of insulin is vital. It also signposts to extra education on offer for colleagues.

Insulin is a lifesaver for many patients with diabetes as it helps keep glucose levels stable, however if used incorrectly it can be a dangerous drug.

This year colleagues are encouraged to watch this 90 second animation created by Cambridge Diabetes Education Programme (CDEP).

It shares information about two safety topics:

  • Safe use of Insulin in Hospital (for acute inpatient staff)
  • Safe use of Insulin in Community (for other staff)

You can register and carry out awareness training online by visiting the CDEP website.

Help to prevent sharps injuries

Earlier this year we shared some personal stories from colleagues who had been injured with a needlestick injury. HRI's A&E Domestic, Scott Bradley, was injured from a needle stick injury after a needle was incorrectly disposed into a domestic waste bin.

Clinical staff should follow the Prevention and Management of Clinical Sharps Injuries and Exposure to Blood and High-Risk Body Fluids Policy. Following these protocols is essential to protecting our colleagues. If you or your team require a refresher or additional training, please contact your team lead or health and safety representative.

Please also be aware of patients who self-administer medication using needles. Making a sharps bin available at the bedside is the safest option.
