Today is Earth Day and we're looking at the fantastic ways #TeamCHFT have been helping save our planet. The total amount recycled at CHFT over the past year is 460.205 tonnes (not including furniture).
So, what does 460.205 tonnes look like? Well, that's the same as:
- 65 African elephants
- 38 double-decker buses
- 1.15 million smartphones
- More than 3 blue whales - the largest animal on earth
- 460 grand pianos
- More than 76,000 bricks
Thanks to recycling efforts such as the reuse scheme and the reupholster service, we've also managed to save around £59,000. These schemes have seen 243 items of furniture be rehomed instead of thrown away.
Environment Manager, Grace Barrett, said: "As the manufacture and transportation of new products requires intensive raw materials, refurbishment and recycling of products such as office furniture can reduce the embodied carbon of these items across the Trust by 80% compared to buying brand new. This helps to reduce our environmental impact as well as save money and reduce wastage."
The reupholstery scheme is for any old items such as patient bedside chairs, examination couches and office chairs. To have something reupholstered, contact either nigel.murphy@cht.nhs.uk or william.bennett@cht.nhs.uk
