We're saying goodbye - and a huge thank you - to District Nurse, Karen Ward, who has retired after an incredible 50-year career in nursing.

Community Healthcare Division Secretary, Donna Sutcliffe, shared some of Karen's journey with us:

"Karen began her nursing journey at just 18 years old, and what a journey it has been! Her early years were filled with travel and adventure, but in 1995 she found her calling in community nursing, joining Keighley Road Surgery. From there, her path took her to Beechwood and then to Allan House, as well as time spent working with the Out of Hours service.

"Over the decades, Karen has seen everything there is to see in community nursing - the gladness, the sadness, and everything in between. And through it all, she’s brought her own trademark dry sense of humour.

"Known for her impeccable attendance record and unshakeable dedication, she has been a loyal colleague, a supportive friend, and a role model to many members of her team. She’s been an outstanding mentor to students, always making sure they uphold her famously high standards - especially when it comes to Aseptic Non-Touch Technique (ANTT).

"We do have a saying: “Oh no, we’re going to be Karened!” - it's a phrase that brings equal parts fear and fondness, because if you’ve done something wrong, Karen would spot it, and you’ll never make that mistake again.

"Karen will be deeply missed by all who’ve had the pleasure of working with her. We wish her all the best in her retirement."
