Our Breast Theatre Team are taking small steps to big changes, with their Green Champions, staff nurses Ezrah Limsiaco and Tracy Farrington leading the way.
One initiative they’ve introduced is to have reusable, colourful hats* in their theatres. Each member of the team has been given a hat that they change and wash daily, and some staff have bought some more of their own.
Clinical Director of Surgery, Alison Waterworth, said: “NHS Surgery Departments across the UK are one of the biggest users of plastic and non-sustainable items.
“Ezrah and Tracy have really taken the green operating theatre initiative to their hearts, and the hats are a visual reminder to us every day about our responsibilities to reduce waste.
“Ezrah even bought me a special breast cancer themed hat, which was such a kind gesture.
“We’ve already introduced washable gowns and reusable drapes, and our theatre trays no longer contain single-use items. We also regularly cover sustainability in our huddles and meetings.”
*The Royal College of Surgeons have endorsed the use of reusable theatre hats and have created a Green Theatre Checklist to support the initiative.
