Following a successful pilot of placements for Learning Disability Nursing Students, our first cohort of Mental Health Nursing Students started last week from the University of Huddersfield.

Clinical Educator, Katie Sumpton has created a bespoke induction programme for our students, with one student commenting their second day: "we are learning so much about One Culture of Care and the integration of physical and mental health care needs for patients at CHFT".

Consultant Nurse for Mental Health, Ian Noonan, pictured in blue, said: "Since 2018, the Nursing & Midwifery Council standards for preregistration nursing require nurses in all fields of practice to achieve the same proficiencies for registration.

Having mental health students at CHFT helps them learn and practice physical health skills, whilst helping us meet the ongoing mental health needs of people in our care.

"From our patients' perspectives, separating physical and mental health needs, does not seem to make sense. The more we can do to integrate these ideas a treat the person as a whole, the better".

This cohort of students are going to be working on the acute floor, wards 5, 17, and 20 and in the Emergency Department.

Do say hello and welcome them to the trust if you see them out and about!
