Last year we spoke to Trainee Nursing Associate, Jenny Clifford, who proved that age is just a number as she worked towards finishing her apprenticeship.

Jenny has now completed her apprenticeship, finishing her course with a distinction. We caught up with her about her experience during her time as an apprentice, and what advice she has for other people.

"The apprenticeship route is an amazing opportunity for anyone in a situation like myself. I needed to bring in an income and had no UCAS points to allow entry to university via the traditional route. This apprenticeship offered a degree, whilst maintaining paid employment.

"Returning to education after an absence from the classroom for more than 40 years was the part I feared may cause me the most trouble, but on reflection it has been the best bit! I have absolutely loved attending university. To be in an educational setting through choice rather than necessity placed a whole new slant on the learning experience.

"I found that working hard, proving yourself and not being fearful to challenge was key. The placements proved to be the most rewarding aspect of the course. I have been exposed to areas of healthcare I would not usually encounter (including community nursing, mental health and learning disabilities) I feel I have a broader knowledge of their job roles and issues they encounter on a daily basis, and it has given me food for thought for future job opportunities.

"My advice for anyone who is interested in an apprenticeship would be to have a conversation with your manager and the Clinical Education Team. Speak to people already on the course and ask their opinions and advice."

Jenny's next steps in her career are to continue her learning in the operating theatres, where she is now honing her scrub skills. A huge well done to Jenny on your fantastic achievement.
